Real Science, Stem cells, Vitamin E, and MindBody Techniques
Practically every day, we read in the newspapers and hear on the television contradictory information about our health. Cancer rates are going up. Cancer rates are going down. These sensational and confusing reports occur where media, politics and real science meet. I plan to use this blog to invite people to comment regarding media reports about health issues that concern them. Each week I will choose one subject based on your input, and carefully evaluate the real science behind it (as opposed to the often hyped and/or confused media reports) and then I’ll write a SIMPLE blog on what I think is true.
I am a scientist, not a physician. Specifically I have been trained to understand and evaluate a scientific paper. What happens is that a paper is published in a scientific journal and then a press release prepared by the company or university is distributed to the media, each member of whom writes or talks a story if it sounds catchy. This three step process is what causes problems. Also, the mainstream media tends not to be familiar with what I’ve called new paradigm physiology—where our thought patterns are at least as important as our blood pressure.
Recently a company made an important discovery showing that all of the stem cells, which are sure to be useful for therapies in the future, can be created from one cell taken from the 8 cell stage of a human embryo. The non-scientist who wrote the press release said that the experiment had not destroyed a human embryo because they took only one cell. (It is known that the embryo can still survive and go on to grow flawlessly if one cell is removed at the 8 cell stage.) Unfortunately for the poor scientist and the poor company, the whole matter wound up under the glare of a Congressional investigation which got sidetracked by the misleading press release. (The scientist had in fact used all 8 cells from the embryo to get more data and the real medical promise of the discovery was lost.)
In another example about a year ago, a large study appeared to find that Vitamin E was actually damaging – that high doses seemed to cause illness and even death in folks with
heart conditions. I remember reading the news accounts of this study feeling intuitively that it made no sense. Before I found the time to check out the actual scientific publication, fate intervened and I heard a Director from the NIH Office of Complementary & Alternative Medicine lecture at Georgetown on this study. Actually, the study suffered from a serious logical flaw that trained scientists can easily find: it’s called post hoc analysis. AFTER the data was already in, dosage groups were chosen and compared. The highest dose of vitamin E showed more deaths! It’s pretty likely the self-selected, high dose group with the worst heart conditions to begin were desperately buying and using the most Vitamin E!. The sad thing is that the burst of publicity which followed probably caused many people to stop taking Vitamin E, despite a large number of good studies that shows that it can be helpful. It’s certainly safe or avocadoes would be illegal. The government scientist wondered who had actually funded this study – that’s important information that is not always available. In this case, I suspect it was a mainstream medical society that had a strong bias against alternative nutritional, supplemental, and mindbody techniques for heart disease and a strong bias towards surgery and drugs.
That’s all for now.

Dear Candace
Your idea about inviting people to discussions sounds very exciting!
I am curious to know whether you support the so called "Journey therapy" created by Brandon Bays, and if so, if you also agree to her use of the term "cellular memory"? Many "accredited journey therapists" tend to refer to you, so that's the cause of my curiosity...
Sincerely//

Dear Candace,
I so appreciate this discernment re: scientific research, medicine, newparadigm healing and the media. It is alot for people to navigate on their own, and your ability to "unbundle" the information flow from science to mainstream media provides clarity.
As a former neuroscientist and medical anthropologist...I find everything you talk and write about so delicious! Thank you for being you.
Appreciatively,

Dear Candace,
Very nice to meet you and read your blog, and your new book sounds like another key to this wonderful puzzle we call life.
I would very much like to read about the use of pro-biotics. I have been taking a product that is equivalent to 2 million cups of yogurt in a little pill. I call them my little nano soldiers. From the molecular level in my body I am sending in little living bacteria that defend my body. I have almost zero health issues and I am 59.
Or to be really controversial, the real truth about marijuana.
Thank you and I enjoy reading everything you have written.
Connie
Dear Candace,
I would love to hear your thoughts on autistic spectrum disorder. My son is 4. He was diagnosed at 20 months. He had the MMR at 13 months. By 16 months, he stopped eating. Most docs tell me vaccines have nothing to do with it, and if I bring it up, I am looked at like I'm one of those new agers! He is getting better on mega doses of vitamins and omega-3 and all kinds of therapies but still severely speech delayed. Any thoughts on this confusing, bewildering and gutwrenching matter would be greatly appreciated! Thank you and thanks for this blog.
I too would love to hear your thoughts on the science surrounding autism.
Traditional medicine has really dropped the ball...(actually, dropping the ball would be a kind. More like mega cover-up).
We are using many alternative therapies for my child and the further we get from mainstream medicine, the better she is doing.
Dear Candace,
I have, since reading your book 'Molecules' wondered about the increased incidence (or is it hightened awareness) of MS and any connection with the dis ease of mind and spirit.
Any thoughts?

Dear Candace,
Thank you so much for your pioneering spirit and undying committment to the understanding of the way by which the body and mind connect. I became familiar with your research and material after reading Molecules of Emotion and Your Body is Your Subconscious Mind in 2004 following being trained in a treatment method called Eye-Movement, Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Reading your material gave me such a sense of excitement and validation regarding how the mind effects states in the body. As soon as I learned of your new book (and CD) from an email I received today from HayHouse.com, I immediately ordered them both.
I am a trauma therapist in Cleveland, OH and approach treatment weighted strongly from with a mind/body perspective. Your material provides a wonderfully solid base to this approach.
Can't wait to read the new one!!
All the best to you,
Brooke Kroto
Dear Candace,
I just bought your book this week after I received the email from Louise Hay. I have not read any of your work previously, but can't put this book down. I was drawn to it for several reasons, one being that at the age of 51, I have suddenly developed food allergies. Testing showed soy, legumes, etc..w/the biggest problem being soy. Soy & its' deriatives seem to be in everything. I get swelling, itchiness & redness on my face & eyes. So, I am trying to figure all of this out...is it emotional or physcial? I wonder if you have come across this type of situation in your travels & studies?
Thank you so much,
Sharon
Hi Candace
I just finished Molecules of Emotion and I think I felt my peptides, receptors and cells all cheer with the awareness brought to my mind/body as a result of the information you shared in this amazing book.
I read with particular interest your comments about treating depression. I believe I was "trained" or "taught" to be depressed by my mother who was very depressed and an alcoholic. Is that possible?
When I read about the meeting you had with the female heroine attacks who were in jail at the time, I thought of how beneficial it would be to bring your mind/body information to children and young adults in school who are often struggling to deal with their strange and scary emotions. I would love to do that to help them through such a tough emotional time in their lives and to give them the sense of control over their emotions and their lives the way you gave these heroine attacks hope and the knowledge that they can control their addiction.
Thank you for your courage, and your steadfast belief that old paradigms can be changed and that how we feel is no one else's responsibility except our own.
Health and happiness to you and your family.
Laura
Dear Candance,
I really enjoyed your new book. It is a must read for everyone. Continue the good work
Dear Candace,
I was awestruck by your book 'Molecules of Emotion' and I continue to listen to your CD 'Your Body is your Subconcious Mind'.
I thank you for all of your wonderful work and for speaking out to the world.
For me you have and continue to be an inspiration and a life saver.
I have your lastest book on order now too.
